Isaiah 28:10
"Love no false oath."
(Zechariah 8:17)
'Stop it! Just stop. No more make mention of your lies. We are wearied of the untruths and the half truths. Everyone sees straight through them anyway. Why, you have even fooled yourself into believing what you say.' Hard words, yes? To be honest, I wonder how many of us have said this to ourselves as we tell lie after lie, lay untruth upon untruth, pile exaggeration on top of exaggeration.
But, to get straight to the point, just how many things do we say about ourselves whilst claiming they are the absolute truth, when they are not? Many times I have known of people who told a lie about themselves, their abilities, what they did, or who they are, and as time has passed by they have come to believe that lie themselves, speaking it over and over to all and sundry as if it were reality.
Actually, they repeat it out loud more to convince themselves than others, and this because of a deeply rooted insecurity or anxiety they hold about themselves. Or, how many times have we vowed to do something - given our word, signed on the dotted line, given verbal assurance, put our hand up to volunteer - but knew all along that we would not do, or probably not do it? (And such a terrible shame that we do this to our God even more easily than we do it to people!).
We sure love those false oaths! It is so much easier to believe falsity and trust in lies, simply because righteousness and holy living takes greater effort. Perhaps this is a good day to stop ourselves, sit down and examine the truth of the common testimony we give to others about ourselves - our youth, our private life, our salvation, our spirituality, our family, our relationships, our careers, our sporting and hobby prowess - and consider the following: ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness (Psalm 45:4).
